Albert BIJAOUI was born in Monastir (Tunisia) in 1943.
He has started researches in Astronomy at Paris Observatory on the applications of electronography.
Then, at Nice Observatory, with his collaborators, he built a processing system for astronomical images, especially adapted to large images.
This led him to different applications, for the study of the galactic structure and for observational cosmology. Taking into account his experience in the image analysis, he published the book Image et Information (Masson, Paris, 1981/1984).
With many collaborators, he has introduced the use of the wavelet transform for cluster analysis and for astronomical image processing. This has led them to build a vision model including matching between images, de-noising and restoration, inventory and reconstruction of individual components. Many applications were done or are in progress for astronomical, remote sensing or biological imaging. With Jean-Luc Starck and Fionn Murtagh he published the book Image Processing and Data Analysis: The Multiscale Approach (Cambridge University Press, 1998).
A.Bijaoui has published many papers in international journals on electronography, data, signal and image processing and astrophysics. He has been teaching Image Processing at the University of Nice Sophia Antipolis (1974/2008).
A.Bijaoui was in charge of different tasks in the framework of the French astrophysical community and especially, the Optic & Photometry department of the Paris Observatory (1968-1971), the Centre de Dépouillement des Clichés Astronomiques (1973-1981), the DEA of Astronomy at the University of Nice Sophia Antipolis (1999-2004) and the Cassiopée laboratory (2004-2007).
A.Bijaoui is Correspondent member of the Paris Academy of Sciences.
A.Bijaoui is Honorary Astronomer since 2015.
